Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA)

The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) was set up with the support of the Intelligent Energy – Europe (IEE) programme and a number of public institutions to conduct research and promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. It is a non-profit, public equivalent energy agency operating on a national level. MIEMA collaborates closely with the University of Malta, the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, and various municipalities. Its research activities have focussed on the local context, such as the energy practices of the tourism industry and the performance of PV installations in Malta.

Mission and Activities

MIEMA personnel conduct energy audits and offer an advisory service to encourage a more intelligent use of resources. Its publications have been widely distributed to disseminate information on the optimization of the use of conventional energy resources and to develop renewable sources. The synergistic networking of the Agency has been crucial for MIEMA to reach its objectives.

MIEMA aims to:

  • raise public awareness on energy issues
  • collaborate with national and local authorities towards Malts's energy targets
  • promote SEAPs and the Covenant of Mayors among local communities
  • provide training on energy issues to enterprises
  • participate in energy and environment related projects
  • support research and development in the energy sector
  • promote sustainable development in its social, environmental and economic dimensions
